The investment round filing followed internal memos that warned staff that the future of the ambitious company is heavily reliant on being able to attract fresh funding into the capital-intensive business. The company disclosed the new funding round in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
According to CNBC, SpaceX, which counts Alphabet Inc. (Google) and Fidelity Investments among its investors, hit USD 100.3 billion in valuation following a secondary share sale in October. It had raised about USD 1.16 billion in equity financing in the previous round in April.
2021 has been a record-breaking year for SpaceX as it continued to expand its Starlink Internet constellation. Moreover, the company launched 31 Falcon 9 rockets, all of which were successful. Perhaps more remarkably, the company accomplished this work using just two new Falcon 9 first stages — the remainder of the 29 launches were performed by previously flown Falcon 9 cores. SpaceX also successfully landed a rocket for the 100th time and flew a Falcon 9 for a record 11 times in December to cap off the year. Therefore, 2021 was the year SpaceX demonstrated that being "flight-proven" was far more than just a marketing gimmick.
SpaceX’s internet satellite service Starlink will provide high-speed broadband internet around the world using more than 1’900 satellites, of which 900 were launched in 2021. The constellation is now already providing broadband service in selected areas around the world, as part of a beta-test program with download speeds ranging between 100 Mb/s and 200 Mb/s and latency as low as 20 milliseconds. As of December 31, 2021, Starlink has around 140’000 active users, but this number could grow to over 2.76 million users by 2025.
For 2022, the company has currently scheduled approximately 40 launches – including up to 5 Falcon Heavy missions and at least 35 Falcon 9 launches. This is a record for SpaceX, having never had more launches scheduled in a single year. Simultaneously, after SpaceX’s 2021 performance, 2022 is the first time it could be possible for the company to successfully complete 40 commercial launches in one year.
